A rare solid eighteen carat yellow gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust reference 1601 model. The watch is an early example of the improved, more modern looking, Datejust case that was introduced in round 1957. The watch has a stunning light grey 'pie pan' dial with a combination of traditional stick markers and shaped larger markers at the six and nine o'clock positions. The dial is untouched, and in excellent condition featuring all lume plots in tact. The more attractive 'Dauphine' hands are fitted to these earlier Datejust models, that were later replaced with the more simple baton hands. There is some loss of lume to the hands. The case is made in all eighteen carat gold, which is very rare, as by this time the Day Date, or 'President' had been introduced by Rolex, and this had become the watch of choice for consumers looking for a gold Rolex. The watch is powered by the classic Rolex Swiss made twenty five jewel automatic calibre 1560 that also powered the iconic sports watches such as the GMT and the Submariner. The watch was made circa 1961 with serial number 742XXX. The interior of the case back is stamped 1601, and '18k 750'. The watch is in original condition, lightly polished over the years, and comes with a Foundwell one year warranty against mechanical failure.
